High towers are generally symbols of strength and signs of achievement.
In the Qur'an towers are mostly mentioned in connection with unbelievers. The destruction of the towers (lofty palaces, fortresses) of the unbelievers is one of the signs of divine judgement against them.
How many a township have We destroyed while it was sinful, so that it lieth (to this day) in ruins, and (how many) a deserted well and lofty tower! S. 22:45 Pickthall
And many a township have We destroyed while it was given to wrong-doing, so that it lies in ruins (up to this day), and (many) a deserted well and lofty castles! S. 22:45 Al-Hilali & Khan
As perverted as it is, for some Muslims the destruction of the World Trade Center towers in the terror attack on 9-11 still is a symbol representing the victory of the power of Islam over the infidels (cf. S. 22:45; 33:26; 4:78; 59:2; 8:12,60). See also the entry TERROR.
The lofty tower which Pharaoh allegedly commanded Haman to build (S. 28:38; 40:36-37) also is a symbol of unbelief and defiance against the message of Allah.
