148 THE KEY OF MYSTERIES

Because of this eternal unity of the divine nature, the Holy Spirit is called in one passage the Spirit of the Father, and in another the Spirit of the Son. Thus the Lord Jesus Christ, in telling His disciples not to be anxious about answering their accusers, says: ' It 1 is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.' In the same way the Apostle writes to Christians: 'Because 2 ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba, Father".' Both titles are sometimes given Him in the same passage, as, for example, in the following: 'But 3 ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.'

From a careful study of the holy Scriptures it is evident that the creation of the world, the redemption of mankind, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the dead and the great judgement, are spoken of in intimate connexion now with the Father, now with the Son, now with the Holy Spirit, and yet this is done in such a way as to make it clear that the three divine Hypostases are so united in nature, dignity, power and will, that in these respects they are only one God. This has already appeared from such passages as we have quoted: it will be still more clear from such as the

'Apart 4 from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God set forth to be a propitiation, through faith, by his blood, to show his righteousness, because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God; for the showing, I say, of his righteousness at this present season: that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him that hath faith in Jesus.'
